There exists different types of work permits according to the person&#8217;s situation. Furthermore, these permits influence your rights as a foreign national. The type of permit also determines:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The period of validity, which is the period you can reside in Switzerland before you can renew the permit or leave the country.<\/li>\n<li>The access to certain financial services, like a consumer credit, a credit card or a pension provision or more&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Most of the residence permits allow you a complete geographical and professional mobility in Switzerland since the first of June 2007. This is the case for the following permits: B, C, G and L.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"One_same_document_different_names\"><\/span>One same document: different names<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Although the official term is &#8220;work permit&#8221;, there are different names to refer to it like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Work permit<\/li>\n<li>Residence permit<\/li>\n<li>Establishment permit<\/li>\n<li>Circulation authorization<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Who_gives_those_authorizations\"><\/span>Who gives those authorizations?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The document is given by the canton&#8217;s population service in which you reside. In the case of French borderers, it is the canton&#8217;s population service in which you work that provides you the document. The procedure to get this document depends on the person&#8217;s origin. For example, Nationals of the European Union or belonging to EFTA who wish to work in Switzerland, can begin the procedure through their employer. The person has to provide the following documents:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An identity card or passport<\/li>\n<li>A work certificate from the employer<\/li>\n<li>A completed authorization request form (employer and employee have to fill it)<\/li>\n<li>Depending on the canton: an extract of your police record<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The cost can be between 65 and 90 CHF and can vary from canton to canton.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_are_the_main_types_of_residence_permits\"><\/span>What are the main types of residence permits?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>EU\/EFTA nationals move to Switzerland with a:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swissinfo.ch\/eng\/work-permits\/29191706\" target=\"new\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> B permit<\/a>: or long-term permit<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swissinfo.ch\/eng\/work-permits\/29191706\" target=\"new\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">C permit<\/a>: or establishment authorization<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swissinfo.ch\/eng\/work-permits\/29191706\" target=\"new\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">G permit<\/a>: only for border workers<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swissinfo.ch\/eng\/work-permits\/29191706\" target=\"new\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">L permit<\/a>: or short-term permit<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eda.admin.ch\/eda\/en\/fdfa\/fdfa\/organisation-fdfa\/state-secretariat\/protocol\/manual-for-embassies-and-consulates.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Legitimation card\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each document differentiates itself with the terms of allocation, the validity period and the terms of credit granting:<\/p>\n<table id=\"mytable\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Permits<\/td>\n<td>Conditions of allocation<\/td>\n<td>Validity period<\/td>\n<td>Possibility to obtain a credit?<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>B permit<\/td>\n<td>Employment contract or confirmation of engagement with at least a 12 months period<\/td>\n<td>5 years<\/td>\n<td>Yes, at least 6 months working with the same employer.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>C permit<\/td>\n<td>A 5 year residence in Switzerland at least<\/td>\n<td>Indeterminate<\/td>\n<td>Yes, at least 3 months working with the same employer or as an independent for at least 2 years.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>G permit<\/td>\n<td>Employment contract or confirmation of engagement<\/td>\n<td>5 years, or an engagement period of one year<\/td>\n<td>Yes, if the permit has been possessed for at least 3 to 4 years<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>L permit<\/td>\n<td>Contract or engagement confirmation of a minimum 4 months period<\/td>\n<td>Depends on the contract, maximum 12 months, can be renewed<\/td>\n<td>No<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Obtaining_a_credit_with_a_work_permit\"><\/span>Obtaining a credit with a work permit<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Depending on the permit and its restrictions, people residing in Switzerland can obtain a consumer credit. Be careful, fulfilling the credit request conditions does not guarantee you the loan acquisition. General credit terms apply.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Legitimation_cards\"><\/span>Legitimation cards<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Other then the establishment authorisations, there are also legitimation cards. These cards are a substitute for a residence permit and are valid for the same amount of time. Furthermore, these cards are given to embassy or NGO workers.
